What is Anthropometry?

Anthropometry is the study of the size, proportions and composition of the human body. It has a wide range of uses in both clinical and normal day to day settings  - from tracking the growth of children and infants to measuring changes in fat and muscle mass in athletes to monitoring the nutritional status of the elderly population.

Manufacturers of furniture and car seats use large scale anthropometric studies of populations to decide on the size and proportion of their products to best suit individuals. It is inexpensive and relatively non-invasive, and uses portable instruments like measuring tape, skinfold calipers and weighing scales. In order to be a qualified anthropometrist, one needs to attend certification courses conducted by the International Society of Anthropometry and Kinanthropomety (ISAK) and to maintain proficiency through constant practice on different body types. Whether you are looking to gain or lose weight, or simply to tone up, anthropometry is the most accurate and reliable means for measuring your progress and results.
